History & Trivia
Early wire puzzles were made from bent carpenter's nails, horseshoes, or similar material. Sometimes called tavern puzzles, they were puzzles traditionally forged by blacksmiths to amuse their friends at country taverns, but also by blacksmith apprentices to gain experience. Normally the puzzle must be solved by disentangling the two pieces without bending or cutting the wires. Topological concepts can sometimes be applied to gain insight into the properties and solution of some disentanglement puzzles and solve them mathematically instead of mechanically.
